ISS Security Heroes Honoured

ISS staff at Brisbane Airport Australia, have been honoured for their heroic actions during a major security incident this month. Their quick response and bravery saved lives and highlighted ISS' exemplary security services at the airport.
On Saturday 2nd February a knife-wielding man entered the Brisbane Airport Food Court on Level 4 near the International Terminal. A number of our staff were in the vicinity at the time and stepped in to block the man’s progress as he attempted to injure patrons. The man also indicated he had a bomb strapped to his body and there was heightened panic at the airport as an emergency situation was declared.

ISS staff controlled the situation and made passengers safe at the airport until the Australian Federal Police arrived. They then assisted the AFP in maintaining cordons and evacuating further passengers. The AFP arrested the man, and when the area was declared safe, ISS allowed passengers to reenter the terminal and ensured the airport returned to business as soon as possible.

The officers involved - including Jacob Ingold, Rishit Sawant, Shanal Shavneet Kumar Wayne Russell and Natalie Hanna - were officially congratulated by Brisbane Airport CEO, Gert-Jan de Graaff, in a ceremony last Friday, which was filmed by 7News Queensland. Mr de Graaff honored five ISS staff for their “bravery, courage and professionalism”. He presented each with certificates of recognition and thanked them on behalf of the Airport. ISS A&T EGM, Jonathan Reeves and other senior leaders were also in attendance to commend the group.

Mr de Graaff also thanked ISS for being “a great partner”, and wrote a personal letter of recognition to our CEO Scott Davies. ISS has provided security services at Brisbane Airport for 20 years, and our Aviation Protection Officers are given first-rate security training which has passenger safety as the top priority.

Congratulations to Jacob, Rishit, Shanal, Wayne, Natalie and the whole ISS team at Brisbane Airport for stepping up when its needed most and protecting the public. See the Channel7 News coverage of the incident and award ceremony here.
